On Friday, January 26, 2024, the Terrian-AI team attended Minister Eamonn Ryan’s launch of a year-long pilot project called Urban Sense to monitor greenhouse gas emissions across the city using a network of novel, low-cost sensors distributed across the mobile phone mast infrastructure. The sensors are located in both residential and commercial locations around Dublin and are able to measure gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, but can also check other air quality parameters and weather variables. This allows the project to provide a real-time visual pulse of the city, showing various data trends such as the seasonal cycle in vegetation growth, weather events, and hourly patterns of traffic5.

This innovative and exciting pilot project, funded by Microsoft and Science Foundation Ireland, involved partners from DCC, Edgeliot, Cellnex and Delmec and  is one of several initiatives being developed by Terrain-AI, a large-scale research project focused on understanding emissions of greenhouse gases across terrestrial environments. The project will assist Dublin City Council in developing policy actions that can help reduce emissions and make the city a better place to live, work or visit with cleaner air, safer transport, and less congestion and noise.
